Many people are affected with bruxism, or teeth grinding. Some people may do this consciously during the day, but it can be a larger problem at night while asleep. Grinding your teeth can damage enamel, wear down teeth, cause jaw pain, or irritate your gums. The noise from teeth grinding can also disturb others’ sleep if loud enough.
 
If you grind your teeth, a night guard should be considered. The night guard – similar to a mouth guard worn by athletes – provides a barrier between your top and bottom teeth while you sleep. All night guards are custom fitted to allow for proper breathing and comfort. We will take impressions of your teeth and have the night guard created by a dental lab to ensure proper fit, unique to your mouth and designed for comfortable protective wear. Night guards are very durable and can be worn for years with proper care.
 
Other therapies that can help with teeth grinding, include exercises such as jaw massage and warm compresses, which can relax the jaw. Refraining from chewing gum or other foods such as bagels, is very helpful, as repetitive chewing strains the jaw joint and increases grinding (bruxism). You should also avoid alcoholic drinks and drinks with caffeine, as these can increase the likelihood you will grind your teeth.
